Burl (a.k.a. Juglans Nigra) is a protuberant growth on a live tree caused by the presence of dormant buds. Its cause could be a genetic defect, a disease or the result of an injury. This rare wood is very strong, light in weight and has a wavy, curly grain. It can be harvested without harm to the host tree. Its beauty and strength make it sought after for musical instruments, gun stocks, turnings and carvings. Veneers of Burl are prized for furniture, expensive automobiles and Humidors.
